The Benefits of Psyllium

Psyllium (Husks/Seeds)
Botanical Name: Plantago ovata, Plantago ispaghul

Whole natural psyllium is one of the best dietary fibers known to man and is primarily used as a gentle intestinal cleanser. Psyllium consists of husks and seeds which act as a sponge in the intestinal tract and swell as they absorb water, toxins and waste material. This forms a soft, bulky stool that passes through the colon quickly and evacuates more smoothly and easily.

Psyllium grows worldwide as a shrub-like herb called plantain. There are many species of plantain that can produce up to 15,000 tiny, mucilage-coated seeds per plant. However, the plantain herb that produces psyllium seed is not the same plant you may know as edible plantains.

Psyllium husks are from the outer coating of the psyllium seed, the same as the bran layer of grains. Psyllium seeds are coated with mucilage, a gelatinous material that swells upon contact with moisture. For this reason psyllium seeds and husks are a popular bulking agent, and are especially useful for cases of chronic constipation and many other gastrointestinal problems.

There are several species of psyllium, but the seed husks from blonde psyllium (Plantago ovata) are the finest quality and possess the highest fiber content. Psyllium contains more fiber, gram for gram, than any other fiber source. It's important to remember to always follow the consumption of psyllium fiber with a full glass of water, as it expands after ingestion.

How Psyllium Improves Digestion and Elimination

Psyllium speeds the passage of the stool through the digestive tract by softening the stool and attracting water, thereby producing more bulk. Psyllium is often used as a bulk forming agent to relieve constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids and inflammatory bowel disease.

Psyllium lubricates and heals the intestines and colon and has been traditionally used to treat autointoxication, an underlying cause of many conditions and diseases, by cleansing the intestines and removing wastes and toxins.

Leading health experts recommend that we eat 25 to 35 grams of total dietary fiber daily, but most people consume only 10 to 15 grams a day. Psyllium seed husks are a concentrated source of dietary fiber, so only a small amount is needed to experience noticeable health benefits (1 or 2 full teaspoons per day). Also be sure to consume other sources of fiber whenever possible, as each different form does provide its own measurable health benefits.

Psyllium is Used in the Treatment of Many Conditions

Psyllium is a high quality fiber with gentle yet effective cleansing and strengthening properties that is used in-conjunction with other types of fiber and herbs to help treat

Constipation
Provides bulk and draws more water from the bowel into stools.

Colitis and Crohn's disease
Psyllium nourishes, lubricates and strengthens the colon walls.

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
Psyllium has been studied for more than twenty years as an effective remedy for irritable bowel syndrome symptoms. Research also shows that psyllium may help to increase the elimination of fat in the stool. (Psyllium seeds proved to be superior to wheat bran with respect to stool frequency and abdominal distention and therefore should be preferred in treatment of IBS and constipation (Hotz and Plein, 1994).

Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis
Psyllium fiber helps scrub mucoid plaque from intestinal walls and draw wastes out of diverticula pouches.

Psyllium also acts as a prebiotic - aiding to heal the inner lining of inflamed intestines. Dietary fiber is the major source of nutrition for normal intestinal micro flora. A healthy balance of friendly bacteria in the colon helps reduce inflammation and strengthens colon walls.

High Cholesterol
Regular psyllium intake can help lower bad (LDL) cholesterol.

Autointoxication
Psyllium helps remove encrusted toxins and wastes before they are absorbed through the colon wall.

Leaky Gut Syndrome (Intestinal Permeability)

Leaky gut syndrome results in an increase in the permeability of the mucosal intestinal lining, which allows larger molecules (toxic byproducts) to pass through and be absorbed into the bloodstream. these toxins can create a polluted internal environment and can become trapped wihtin the liver and other organs. In effect, large spaces develop between the cells of the gut wall allowing bacteria, toxins and under-digested food to leak in. Leaky gut is a surprisingly common problem and is often overlooked by many practitioners when designing treatment.

Dysbiosis (microbial overgrowth or microflora imbalance)
Microbial overgrowth (dysbiosis) can lead to a wide variety of symptoms due to reactions to the toxic substances produced by bacteria, parasites, or fungi.

Dysbiosis symptoms can be as varied as:
  • Behavioral Disorders

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

  • Depression

  • Headache

  • Immune Dysfunction

  • Insomnia

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome

  • Joint Pain

  • Learning Disorders

  • Nutritional Deficiencies

  • Skin Disorders

  • Individuals that suffer from inflammatory disorders may be experiencing immune problems, which can be associated with autointoxication (a toxic bowel) and inadequate digestion. It is becoming increasingly apparent that chronic degenerative diseases are evidence of inadequate digestion, assimilation, and elimination. The release of the 1988 Surgeon General's Report on Health and Nutrition confirmed the role of nutrition in health conditions by stating unequivocally that chronic degenerative diseases are dietary related.

Psyllium Fiber is the Most Effective Colon Cleanser Available

Blonde psyllium fiber should be the primary ingredient in any colon cleansing program as it is considered to be the highest quality soluble and insoluble fiber source available. One of the biggest concerns individuals have about completing a colon cleanse is the worry that it will cause them to constantly run to the washroom for days, impacting their regular daily routines.

Blonde psyllium will not cause digestive discomfort, excessive diarrhea or frequent bathroom visits. In fact, blonde psyllium fiber is the fiber source of choice for individuals with digestive conditions such as IBS and colitis due to its gentle yet effective colon scrubbing and nourishing properties.

For variety, blonde psyllium powder can also be mixed into soups, sauces, shakes or smoothies. Just remember that they will thicken what they are added to, so adjust the liquid accordingly.

    Psyllium Helps Lower Cholesterol

Studies have shown that soluble fibers such as psyllium husk may help clear the body of excess cholesterol, reducing the chances of developing heart conditions.

Other studies have also suggested that boosting the regular consumption of fiber in one's diet, including psyllium fiber; can help promote lower insulin and blood sugar levels in diabetics.

For individuals that are concerned about weight loss, regular psyllium consumption can enhance the feeling of fullness and help reduce hunger cravings. Incorporating psyllium and other sources of fiber within your diet has been proven to assist in weight loss.

Psyllium is a Natural Laxative that Does NOT Cause Bowel Dependency

Psyllium is considered an excellent colon and intestine cleanser as it does not irritate the mucous membranes of the intestines like other harsh dependency causing laxatives, such as cascara sagrada and senna. Psyllium is a very gentle colon cleansing herb and will not cause cramping, diarrhea or excessive bathroom visits.

Psyllium helps strengthen and restore intestinal tone by strengthening the colon's peristalsis motion. Peristalsis is the smooth muscular contraction that propels food down the digestive tract and feces out of the body. Dependency causing laxatives such as cascara sagrada and senna can weaken this wave-like muscle contraction, causing dependency for bowel movements, whereas psyllium helps strengthen and promote your natural peristalsis muscle contractions.

Psyllium is very safe and is used by millions of people throughout the world each year. Unlike stimulant laxatives, psyllium husks are not habit forming. Psyllium fiber can be used each and every day for as long as desired. It adds bulk to stools, helps clear the intestines of deposits, acts as a mild intestinal lubricant, and helps maintain regularity. When psyllium comes in contact with liquid, it swells and becomes a gelatinous mass which assists in colon cleansing and transporting the waste through the intestinal tract.

    Complementary Herbs and Nutrients

    Other soluble and insoluble fibers

Many fiber sources absorb toxins and heavy metals and eliminate them before they can be reabsorbed into the bloodstream. Used in unison, these fibers help promote healthy circulation and cholesterol levels, regulate bowel movements and promote improved digestion and liver function.

Great dietary fiber sources include: Oat bran, Glucomannan Root, Apple Pectin, Triphala Fruit and Prune Powder.

    Probiotics

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria normally present in the digestive tract. Beneficial microflora has an essential role in maintaining good gastrointestinal health. In the absence of friendly flora, an overgrowth of harmful microbes can take place, particularly yeast and bacteria. This can result in secondary damage to the integrity of the gut wall, increased fermentation, putrefaction and toxin overload.

    Plant Sourced Digestive Enzymes

Digestive Enzymes break down food particles, enabling the nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream for use in various bodily functions and for storage in the liver or muscles. This stored energy is later converted by other enzymes for the use by the body when necessary. Enzyme depleted diets (cooked and processed foods) cause poor digestion and decreased nutrient assimilation.

As we age, there is also a natural decrease in the amount of digestive enzymes that are produced, leading to further gastric dysfunction. If the human body breaks down and absorbs fewer nutrients, it may be leaving more putrefied fecal matter behind in the colon, which is one precursor in the development of gastrointestinal conditions.
