What is Glucose?
Glucose is a sugar found in the bloodstream that is the body's main source of energy. It is a simple sugar, meaning it cannot be broken down into other sugars, because it is already in its simplest form. People obtain glucose by eating foods that contain carbohydrates, such as breads and cereals, vegetables, fruits and sugary sweets. Glucose is also manufactured in the body through the breakdown (metabolism) of protein and fats.
Blood glucose levels go up and down throughout the day. Think of a teeter-totter. When you eat, blood glucose (blood sugar) goes up. When you exercise, blood glucose goes down. In people without high blood sugar, insulin automatically helps the body deal with these changes. People with high blood sugar inject insulin to try and mimic the body's natural insulin action as closely as possible. However, injected insulin cannot perfectly match the changes in blood sugar. Someone with chronic high blood sugar has to work hard at it to keep the teeter-totter from tipping.
When food is eaten, it is broken down into glucose and absorbed into the bloodstream. As the amount of glucose in the bloodstream starts to rise, an abdominal gland called the pancreas reacts by producing insulin. This natural hormone helps carry the glucose from the bloodstream into the cells of muscle and fat tissue.
Inside the cells, glucose is broken down and converted into adenosine triphosphate, better known as ATP, which is the body's primary fuel for energy.
Without insulin, glucose cannot be processed and builds up in the bloodstream, creating unstable blood glucose/sugar levels.
Normal glucose levels fall between 70 and 150 mg. Levels typically are lower in the morning, and rise after meals. Blood sugar levels consistently above 150 are indicative of hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar.
Chronic low levels, falling below 70, characterize hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Symptoms of this condition are lethargy, impaired mental functioning, irritability and loss of consciousness. Persistent hyperglycemia may result in diabetes mellitus, which is the most common disease related to blood sugar regulation failure.
